Abstract:Background Currently a randomized controlled trial is used to prove the effectiveness of the online treatment Etendebaas.nl. Research showed that adherence is an important factor influencing the effectiveness of treatments. In this study reasons for patients to drop out before completing the treatment program and the experiences with Etendebaas.nl will be elaborated. To do so we will both look at features from the online treatment program and underlying motives from clients to drop-out prematurely. This way we hope to get better insights in features that influence premature drop-out. The research question is: Which factors play a role in premature drop-out with the online treatment Etendebaas.nl and what are the experiences with this treatment? Methods Appointments for semi-structured interviews were made by email with five clients. These interviews were composed on the basis of individual client-features that come from the intake and the evaluation-questionnaires, such as daily schedule and other problems besides the eating disorder. Besides these individual features, treatment-features that can influence adherence were questioned, such as program design and use of dialogue and social support. Beforehand an interview schedule was made for each respondent. The interviews were transcribed and devided into fragments. These fragments were coded and given a label. This resulted in a schedule that was used as a summary for the five interviews that were conducted. Results First of all a new type of drop-out has been distinguished: intended by the format of the treatment program. In this case the client or counselor do not initiate drop-out, but drop-out occurres through the protocol of the treatment. Furthermore the private situation of the client appears to be the most important reason to drop-out. Lack of time is part of this situation. The affiliation between the client and the program is important for improving adherence. All information given by the client in the intake, the assignments and the contact with the counselor should be taken in consideration to treat clients as individually as possible. The effectiveness of the treatment could also be increased by making the contact with the counselor more personal.
