Abstract:This study strives to determine the factors that might enhance or lessen the victims’ intention to participate in victim-offender mediation. Specifically the influence of crime severity and the moment of victim-offender mediation (before or after the trial) were taken into account. By assumptions made on previous research, it was expected that relatively low severity would lead to a high intention of victim participation in victim-offender mediation. Furthermore, it was expected that mediation after the trial would lead to a positive attitude. This study was a 2 (crime severity: high vs. low) x 2 (moment of mediation: before vs. after trial) between subject experiment. Research was conducted using an online survey among Dutch participants, in the age between 18 and 55 years old. These participants did not have any experience with victim-offender mediation, nor were they ‘real’ victims. The results indicate that severity of the crime did not influence victims’ participation intention. However, severity of the crime did influence perceived self-efficacy toward mediation and anticipated fear - disgust and -anger toward the offender. No support was found for the expectation that mediation after the trial would lead to a positive attitude. Practical implications were addressed. For example, it would be wise to provide information about self-efficacy, especially to victims of a relatively high severity crime.
