Abstract:Presenteïsme can be described as a reduction in work productivity because of a person’s health condition. It seems that presenteïsme cannot affect healthy people, but this effect is still unknown because there isn’t much research done regarding this topic. There are many different methods and research instruments to measure presenteïsme, but all of those instruments have one problem in comment; the methods were not tested on validity. Other problems that occur using these instruments are problems with the responsiveness of the questions and problems regarding the recall period. The Work Productivity and Activity Impairment-General Health (WPAI-GH) tool measures presenteïsme and is often used in scientific research. This instrument occurs to have problems with responsiveness and an optimal recall period as well and the validity has never been proved. The goal of this research was to find answers about the responsiveness and the recall period and to test the validity of the instrument. Eight employees were selected by telephone for this qualitative research. The employees had an average age of 36, their profession varied from Human Research Manager to Deliveryman and they had a variation in education from MBO to University. All the employees participated in the interviews. The Three-Step-Test-Interview method (Hak, van der Veer & Jansen, 2004) was used to observe the interaction between the employees and the WPAI-GH instrument. After the interviews took place, transcripts were made and the important data were selected by a deduction method. After the selection procedure was done, the data was analyzed using an inductive analyzing method, regaining subthemes within the selected data. There were found differences between the conceptual interpretations of the WPAI-GH. At first the employees had different interpretations of the words ‘Productivity’ and ‘Health Problems’. Second, the employees had also a different interpretation of Anker 10 and a few employees had problems with the practical using of Anker 0. Third, the employees had problems with the recall period, because it was too short. The employees had different conceptual interpretations of the WPAI-GH instrument. Therefore, a fundamental concern of the usability and validity of the WPGAI-GH was the outcome of this research.
