Abstract:	Objective: Validation of the Dutch DSM-IV Screen for Pathological Gambling (10-item DSM-IV questionnaire). The Dutch addiction treatment center Tactus Verslavingszorg wants to use this assessment tool in its online intervention Gokkendebaas.nl. A validation study was executed to investigate if the 10-item DSM-IV questionnaire is a valid screening tool to assess a DSM-IV classification of pathological gambling. The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) was used as a gold standard. Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 179 gamblers who participated in the online treatment. Diagnoses made by the 10-item DSM-IV questionnaire were compared with diagnoses made by the SOGS. The relationship between the two assessment tools, the value of sensitivity and specificity as well as the positive and negative predictive value were calculated to test the validity of the 10-item DSM-IV questionnaire. Results: The study revealed that the 10-item DSM-IV questionnaire is a valid assessment tool. The overall accuracy of the two measurement instruments was 83.8%. The value of sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value ranged from 0.21 to 0.99. Finally, there was also a moderate correlation between the total score of the 10-item DSM-IV questionnaire and the total score of the SOGS. Conclusion: The 10-item DSM-IV questionnaire is a valid screening tool for the online intervention Gokkendebaas.nl to assess a DSM-IV classification of pathological gambling. © 2013 Nicole Freyer.
