Abstract:Introduction: Nowadays there is more emphasis on personal memories. Self-defining memories are part of the autobiographical memory, and this autobiographical memory is almost inseparable from psychological functioning. Various research has found that self-defining memories are related to psychological variables, such as personality traits and the degree of depression. It is unclear, however, whether these relationships with anxiety and depression persist, when controlling for personality traits and dimensions of self-defining memories. Method: Respondents were recruited from the LISS-panel. The sample includes 362 participants aged 25-40 years, who have completed the Self-Defining Memory Task (SDMT). In addition, 282 respondents have completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) en 107 respondents the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP). Correlations are examined by using Spearman and then a regression analysis was performed. Results: Average of 53.2% of the memories had a positive valence, 58.1% was specific, 30.3% contained a positive evaluation and 17.9% were given a positive meaning. Besides various correlations between self-defining memories, personality traits and anxiety and depression, there appear to be some variables having an important relation. Emotional Stability has a relation with both anxiety and depression. But the dimension of meaning construction, and more specifically positive evaluation and positive meaning have a relation with depression. Discussion: Differences in the results can partially be explained by differences in the studied group, the research design and the correlations among the personality traits in the studied group. More scientific research is recommended, to repeat this study and comparisons can be made. In addition, a personal approach is recommended and it is also important that besides personality traits, the meaning of self-defining memories will be used to increase the psychological well-being, and decrease psychological complaints.
