Abstract:INTRODUCTION A lot of the elderly in nursing homes experience feelings of loneliness. These feelings of loneliness cause feelings of depression in a lot of cases. It is also known that loneliness and depression can play a role in the experience of reduced well-being. Using the life-review intervention ‘Dierbare herinneringen’ it is tried to influence the feeling of well-being of the elderly in a positive way. This research focuses on recollecting specific, positive memories. The goal is to influence the feelings of loneliness, depression and well-being. METHOD There were questionnaires completed by 25participants in the age of 65+, living in nursing homes. Before the intervention started there was a measurement and after the intervention ended there was another measurement, where the constructs loneliness, depression and well-being have been measured. One-Way ANCOVA’s have been carried out to examine the effects of the intervention on loneliness, depression and well-being. Besides that, Paired Samples t-tests have been carried out to take a closer look at the effects of the intervention on both the experimental group and the control group. RESULTS No significant effects of the intervention have been found with respect to the control group. For loneliness a significance value of p = 0.417 was found, for depression p = 0.874 and for well-being p = 0.194. In both the experimental and the control group there were reduces of the feelings of loneliness and depression. Just the decrease of feelings of depression in the control group was found to be significant, p = 0.011. CONCLUSION This research shows that recollecting of specific, positive memories, in a structured way, has no effects on the feelings of loneliness, depression and well-being, experienced by the elderly living in nursing homes. However, there are still sufficient starting points, from where further research can be performed.
