Abstract:This report is the result of research done as part of the department Design, Production and Management, within the context of my bachelor’s thesis for the study Industrial Design. A3 Architecture Overviews exist in the interdisciplinary discipline of System Engineering. These are used as a means of communication in the design process of complex systems (for instance at the company Thales). This research aims at the opportunities that new technologies, such as touch interaction and interactive zooming, offer to make the A3 Architecture Overview a more usable tool. The A3AOs are now used on paper and the expectation is that interactivity and corresponding new functionalities have an added value for the industry. To this end, an analysis has been made of the context of use, of the original design of the A3AO and how this technology has developed through the years. For this, interviews have been held with several experts. Furthermore, all relevant hardware and software options in the field of human media interaction have been analyzed. This has led to different propositions for the improvement of the A3AOs. These possible functionalities are discussed in the interviews with experts and are graded on five aspects. Seven functionalities have been chosen to be developed for the demonstration. The proposed functionalities are developed in the program Intuiface, in combination with Deepzoom Composer. The demonstration is held on a Microsoft Surface 2 Pro tablet. This demonstration is used to discuss the applicability of the technologies with the experts. The new technologies offer more advanced means of communication with A3AOs. The most important benefits are gained through diagrams in which zooming delivers more information and through linking information on different parts of the A3AO. Secondary benefits are gained through the use of a centralized environment for reviewing, through explaining A3AOs by means of annotated movies and by making links with external information and requirements. A key aspect that emerges at several functionalities is that more information can be transferred, without leading to a higher threshold for the use of that information. Additionally, the research has shown that there is no software available that can offer all required functionalities for the digital A3AOs. A plan has been made that Thales can use to incrementally develop, implement and evaluate technologies for the use of digital A3AOs. This software can be used on regular computers, but is most valuable on touch devices. Tablets are currently the most interesting hardware. If in the future portable hardware is developed with an A3 screen size, it can act as a catalyst for the use of digital A3AOs.
