Abstract:In order to answer the research question why Chinese engineers patent, the present thesis pursued a twofold research purpose to explore drivers of patenting behavior of Chinese engineers and illuminate the influence of the Chinese environment on engineers’ individual patenting behavior. The theoretical framework introduced a conceptualization of patenting behavior as determined by patent awareness and patenting motivation. While patent awareness describes a sufficient knowledge of patents to use the system effectively, patenting motivation describes the willingness to patent determined by intrinsic or extrinsic motivators. Based on in-depth interviews carried out in the R&D facilities of a multinational corporation in China, the paper identified seven drivers of patenting behavior. As organizational factors, supportive company culture, supervisory encouragement and reward system emerged. Working experience, intrinsic work motivation, extrinsic altruistic motivation and career orientation constituted the individual drivers of patenting behavior. The Chinese environment showed to exert an ambiguous influence that depending on the individual resulted in a positive or negative influence on individual’s patenting motivation. The present research is the first paper to provide a detailed overview of all the relevant triggers of Chinese engineers’ individual patenting behavior, including how the Chinese environment shapes individuals’ patent perception and patenting behavior.
