Abstract: | This explorative study seeks to clarify how a modular based design strategy influences some critical performance indicators for a video game development project. Next to that, we develop a measurement model and use it empirically assess the influence of synergistic specificity on a modular design strategy. Study results are based on a survey in which 16 worldwide operating game development studios participated. The initial study results indicate that modern video games are often based on a modular design strategy which tents to have a positive influence on the cost efficiency of a development project. Results indicate that an important precondition of implementing a successful modular design strategy is the support of clearly defined design rules. Next to that, this study contributes to the current modularity stream by operationalizing the concept of synergistic specificity and by empirically testing its influence on modularity. From the current findings, it is argued that synergistic specificity complicates the implementation of a modular design strategy and decreases modular benefits. The newly developed measurement items in this study can be used by researchers as a guideline for further research on the concepts of modularity, especially influenced by synergistic specificity. |
