| Abstract: | BAAT Medical, an orthopedic design compary, has instructed the development of a database. This database would be applicable during the design of orthoses and braces, products that are worn by patients in order to support or correct a part of their body. The database would be used to illustrate the design process and improve communication with the customer, illustrate the possible materials and production methods that could be used in orthoses and braces and state material information. In the three months in which the assignment has been carried out, the foundation for the content of the database has been layed out. A study about the purpose of orthoses and braces and what they consist of was conducted. What kind of company BAAT it was researched, therefore are a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats), stakeholder analysis and personas were worked out. With this information, the document "database contents" was established, containing all possible AM techniques (additive manufacturing), closures, connections, materials, production techniques, textiles and supplies used in orthoses. Research about the material characteristics and how to test these has been conducted. Tests about the attachment of hook and loop fasteners on velours (textiles have been carried out. These results are used to determine the material properties to be mentioned on the labels and to provide a "checklist material information" that can be used in order to realise the labeling of the materials in the database. Requirements were established to test whether the database meets the intended results. Also, an organization system for the database has been worked out. Finally, three concepts for the design of the database were given and using interviews with experts and a list with the five most important requirements, one concept was chosen. The program of requirements has not yet been completed, certain values are left blank. Also, further research into the material properties is still needed. In three months, it was not possible to realize the placement of the database. Further development and design of the database will have to be carried out later by others. However, a draft for the design of the labels, the design of the database and and the system to organize the database have been documented. How BAAT can start with the implementation of the database is described in the recommendations. |
