Abstract:Aim: Testing caregiving employees of residential care institutes’ abilities evaluating the well-being of their (elderly) residents. Methods: Testing absolute agreement between observational scores of employees about resident well-being with residents’ self-report scores, on a single question. Additionally, the single well-being question’s self-report scores correlation with an existing well-being scale, and whether anticipated relations with other constructs could be established, were tested. Participants were 32 caregiving employees, and 30 of their residents. The employees received a training about well-being. Results: Residents’ and caregiving employees’ scores were found to be in moderate agreement. Correlations were found for the single well-being question with an alternate measure, and depression. Self-reported well-being wasn’t related with flow, assistance with daily tasks, and whether or not the resident had a partner. For 65.5% of the residents employees didn’t differ more than one scale point in their ratings. Conclusions: Caregiving employees aren’t yet good enough at evaluating their residents’ well-being. However, the self-report scores cannot suffice either. Whenever possible both scores should be used together. As residents are sometimes indisposed, however, employees observation skills should be improved. Yet, agreement between the groups was higher than found by previous research. This might indicate the training program’s effectiveness.
