Abstract:Cancer can be particularly stressful. Not only for the one being diagnosed, but also for their spouses. Recent studies have shown the possibility to experience change and growth in the aftermath of a traumatic event. The term to describe this process is post traumatic growth. The goal of this research is to investigate to what extent post traumatic growth can be found in partners. 16 interviews with partners of cancer patients, conducted for another study, were used. Codes were created in advance following the domains as described in the PTGI. All interviews were examined in order to find statements that could be related to PTG. Remaining statements indicating growth were analysed to explore possible new domains. Signs for post traumatic growth were found in all of the interviews. There were three domains on which growth was most present: relating to others, personal growth, and value of life. Additionally 4 new domains were found: acquiescence, being able to contribute, fulfillment and increased appreciation of partner. This study provided support for the theory that partners of cancer patients can experience growth and positive change as a reaction to the illness of their spouses. Implications of these research findings are discussed.
