Abstract:In light of the incurable nature of dementia, interventions like reminiscence were created to lighten the symptoms of the illness. This study describes the observations during a reminiscence intervention with the focus on the question-answer-patterns. Observations were made in three groups of elderly people in different stages of dementia in eight sessions given during a period of eight weeks. During the sessions both the implementers’ communication techniques as well as the participants’ reactions to it were noted. To test whether there were differences between the groups chi-squares were calculated. The pattern of communication techniques used by the implementers showed differences: the more severe the stage of dementia the more communication techniques with an animating nature or techniques with the use of the objects were used. Furthermore the results showed that positive reactions were caused by different communication techniques than negative reactions. To also keep the elderly in the more severe cases of dementia involved during the intervention, the implementers needed to use a broader range of the communication techniques. This shows that reminiscence interventions can also be effective for elderly with severe dementia. It also highlights the importance of the communication techniques during the intervention.
