Abstract:Photovoice is a participatory action research method that allows groups or individuals to express their perceptions about their lives or environments through photographs. The outcomes of Photovoice projects can be used to reach to policymakers and cause social change. Photovoice is often used in mental illness research, it gives users the possibility to express themselves in a manner that can generate knowledge about the perceptions of these groups. A lot of these studies report individual benefits from the Photovoice method. The aim of this systematic literature review is to explore the individual therapeutic benefits that Photovoice or interventions based on Photovoice might have. Ten out of thirteen reviewed studies report individual benefits. Notable is that most of the mentioned benefits over these studies seemed related to psychological well-being. Only one of these studies did a randomized controlled trial on the therapeutic effects of a Photovoice intervention. Found effects in this study were: enhanced autonomy, less self-stigmatization and a higher proactive coping with stigma. It seems there is not enough evidence for the therapeutic effects of Photovoice to implement it in metal health care. Amongst the recommendations are several methodological requirements for future research on the therapeutic effects of Photovoice interventions.
