Abstract:Introductions: Health care technology is making big changes within the healthcare sector. Proposed advantages foreground efficiency, i.e. technological innovations can save time and money. However, healthcare professionals also express doubt concerning increased use of healthcare technology, because of potential harms to the quality of healthcare. To gain insight in how healthcare professionals envision future healthcare technology and its relation to quality of care, the research question is: How do healthcare professionals imagine future healthcare can be improved with the usage of healthcare technology, and what future role do they see for themselves? Methods: This question is answered by analysing the letters about the future from 35 employees from a healthcare organisation in Twente. Using inductive qualitative analysis, a coding scheme was developed consisting of two parts: 1) which technological innovations were imagined, 2) which values and purposes were proposed to be served with these innovations. Within these two parts, attention was paid to differences between client- and professional related purposes, and to the anticipated role of technology and professionals. Results: According to participants, healthcare can be improved with technological innovations, which improve the quality of life of the clients regarding autonomy and satisfaction of their needs. Furthermore technological innovations can support healthcare professionals with the monitoring of clients, reading the clients feelings and needs and administrative works. The roles of healthcare professionals and technologies are described by the employees according to their aspirations. It turns out that in the field of development, personal encounters, and professionalism, they see a continued large role of the healthcare professional with technology in a supporting role. Discussion: This research was done with the letters of employees who wrote the letters from a positive viewpoint. To get a more complete view on how healthcare professionals think about healthcare technology and its implementation in the healthcare sector, it is also important to include neutral and negative future imaginations in future research.
