Abstract:Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks present a serious threat to online organizations. These attacks can have a serious impact on organizations in terms of brand image and revenues. An efficient way to combat DDoS attacks is to store a signature for every attack. This way any attack can be detected as soon as this signature is found in traffic. However, the process is not that easy and this signature generation process is usually time and effort consuming. To help solve this signature generation problem, in this thesis, we propose an automatic methodology to generate payload based signatures for DDoS attacks. In doing so, this work sheds light on the different types of DDoS attacks and the techniques commonly used in performing DDoS attacks. It also inspects the relations between different payloads of the same attack. The research concludes by proposing a signature generation algorithm and validating it using practical tools.
