Abstract:In the construction sector the awareness of the importance of circular use of materials has arisen. This means that materials which are normally disposed of are reused, upcycled or recycled. In the rising awareness several different parties take part and circular use of materials becomes a more and more accepted and developed way of reaching sustainable buildings. In the project of the construction of the new building for the Sterrenschool, executed by TRAJECT Adviseurs & Managers and commissioned by STIP Hilversum, is being developed with circularity as a means to reach sustainability. Research is performed as commissioned by TRAJECT to the opportunities of circular use of materials. Firstly, this is done through analyzing the situation. The established problem is that TRAJECT lacks some insight in the opportunities of circular use of materials. By going through a designprocess with using circular materials, it can be made clear how to handle circulair materials. The construction process has several phases, where the end goal should be in focus. In this case the end goal is a sustainable building. The target group is the user of the building, which are the teachers and students in this case and they should be considered in the process. Secondly, the players in the construction sector are analyzed. Architects, contractors, consultancy agencies and clients are parties in the building sector that influence the construction of a building. Moreover, a lot of network companies and organizations are promoting a circular economy. The design of the architect offers possibilities for the use of circular materials in the school. Furthermore, the current school offers plenty materials which can be used in a circular way. These materials and possibilities offer the base for idea generation, which are guided by design guidelines. These design guidelines are based upon promoting the circularity and result from the analysis. The ideas are rated based on criteria which are based on circularity. Three concepts are established on the basis of estimations of the sufficiency of the ideas. These ideas are elaborated into concepts and have a various degree of circularity. The first concept has a circularity of upcycling with which the original function of the materials is unrecognizable. The second concept has a circularity of upcycling with which the orgininal function of the materials is still visible, however, the orgininal function is not the new function of the materials. The final concept has a circularity of reuse, with which the materials could be recognized from the old school. A clear image can be portrayed by elaborating on three different extents of circular use of materials, since it will show the ways in which materials can be used circularly. The developed end result is chosen based on the consideration of which product will be most useful to the school. Due to the fact that the project deals with a tight budget, the best addition to the building will be a product that will be needed all the same. The result of the research is a product that spares material from the waste as well as saving new material. The product that is designed is a warderobespace for coats and bags for the students, made by material from the old school.
