Abstract:In this thesis we develop a generic operational planning and control model based on agent technology for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in the primary aluminium industry. We focussed on AGVs that transport anode pallets in aluminium smelters. First, a MAS is designed by following the Prometheus methodology. Second, we designed an AGV system and third, we developed a simulation model to evaluate the performance of the MAS control rules and AGV system. The generically built model can assess the current situation of (potential) customers of Hencon and experiment with alternative operational planning and control strategies and AGV system designs. We verified and validated our design by considering a smelter layout that closely resembles a real aluminium production facility. In that study, we observed that the performance (from several perspectives) is not always increasing when one considers more AGVs in the system.
