Abstract:There seems to be a pressing need for rural development in emerging and developing economies to achieve the implementation of UN SDGs. But, up till now, no research has been performed concerning financial inclusion (FI) as a tool to improve rural standards of living. The latter leaves a knowledge gap this thesis focusses on by answering the main research question: ‘How can FI be used as a tool to contribute to rural development and to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals?’ To answer the main research question, this thesis is structured as a cross-sectional study, using secondary quantitative data. The most important findings regarding FI’s contribution to rural development are: 1) FI and economic growth develop simultaneously while contributing to each other, 2) economic growth is strongly related to rural development, and 3) employment plays no role in FI’s contribution to rural development. Furthermore, FI contributes to the SDGs via increasing access to financial services (amongst women) and FI’s contribution to economic growth and decreasing the employment gender gap. The SDG framework has shown to be a suitable framework to guide organizations through sustainable development while preventing the achievement of particular sustainability goals at the expense of other sustainability goals.
