Abstract:The heating and cooling sector occupies almost half of European Union’s energy consumption. In households, heating and hot water accounts for almost 79% of its energy use. According to research done by Eurostat around 85% of heating and cooling systems are run by energy from fossil fuels while only 15% from renewable energy (European Commission, 2020). To achieve EU’s climate and energy goals two major solutions can be implemented i.e (i) lowering the use of fossil fuels while increase the share of renewable energy and (ii) to make existing systems more energy efficient. This research focuses on the second solution, on developing a model to investigate the process of a specific part of a heat pump in more detail to be able to increase its efficiency.
