Abstract:To help the transition towards more sustainable energy production, the combustion processes can be optimised. However this requires a good understanding and an accurate description of the combustion itself. In this context, numerical simulations have shown to be a very adequate tool. Many numerical models have been proposed in the past, however a relatively new concept is the Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model. In this study the FGM model is implemented in the commercial numerical solver CFX. After a validation case, which proved physical behaviour of the model, the quantitative performance is analysed: using a high-velocity dump-stabilised methane-air burner setup, FGM is compared to the existing Burning Velocity combustion model (BVM) and to experimental data. Under the given conditions the FGM model showed to provide very good agreement with the experimental data. When compared to the BVM, the newly implemented model was able to mimic the combustion process better, at comparable computational costs.
