Abstract:
This research focuses on the new media-environment and ether way the principle of agenda-setting functions within these surroundings. Because there is no clear answer to be found in the current literature, this research aims to answer the following question; To what extend ensures the rise of different new media, and blogs in particular, in the context of a presidential election, a decrease in validity concerning the traditional agenda-setting theory and a change in the gatekeepers role of traditional media? As this research shows the agenda-setting theory is still valid. Still, there are strong clues pointing to a developing trend where more and more individual media-agendas are coming about, more people are asking for specific information that matches their personal agendas and the media are trying to separate themselves from the influence of established institutional media. De role of the gatekeeper isn’t touched by this developing trend. However the position of the gatekeepers role could shift from the traditional media that carry it now to a different media institute
