Magnetic self-assembly in 3 dimensions at the macro scale.
Kamp, Pieter (2012)
Self-assembly of 3-dimensional structures at the micro scale may provide paths to the fabrication of new materials. This thesis focusses on the process of 3-dimensional magnetic self-assembly at the macro scale. We intend to extrapolate the lessons learned at the macro scale to the micro scale. Spheres and tetrapods fitted with magnets are submersed in water and agitated by air bubbles. The airflow provides a distorting energy. Successful self-assembly by tetrapods into chains with branching was observed. Results were analysed and conclusions are taken. There are several recommendations for future work.
