De invloed van media verslaggeving op Europese groepenrelaties

Author(s): Moch, O. (2012)

Abstract:
In the present study, the influence of media coverage on european group relationships was examined. Therefore, the influence of a newspaper article regarding its stylistic presentation and meaning on the participants was highlighted. The results suggest that Bild-readers think negative about Greece and perceive more negative emotions towards Greece than people who do not read Bild. Furthermore the Bild-design had effects, in opposition to the article meaning, for example a reduced identification of all participants (including non-bild-readers) with Europe. In connection with a missing need to help other countries, the Bild-design also showed a reduced intention to provide other european countries with financial support. In addition to a reduced identification with Europe, the Bild-design caused a negative attitude towards Spain and Greece, but not against the Netherlands. It should be noted that this effect did not occur solely with Bild-readers, but throughout the whole group The study suggests that the media influence is based not only on the content but also the presentation of a message can have an effect. In individual cases, the design may be even more important than the content itself.
