Abstract:
Behind every child that plays soccer stands an emotional committed parent. Such commitment often leads to negative behavior. Previous research shows that nine of out ten parents are annoyed by behavior from other parents while watching their kids play soccer. Study 1 was designed to find out if presence of a woman and expectation effected behavior of men. Subsequently study 2 was designed to determine in which extend presence of a woman and expectation influenced behavior and depletion of men in an competitive situation. It was an 2(Confederate: woman versus man) by 2(Expectation: low versus high) between subjects experiment. Dependent variables were the degree of negative behavior, positive behavior and depletion. Results show that presence of a woman leads to more negative and positive behavior by men. There was no effect found of expectation. Neither independent variable effected depletion. Implications of the results are discussed.
