Abstract:
The goal of this project is to simulate blood flow in the human brain using the CFD software package OpenFOAM. The immersed boundary (IB) method has proven to be a suitable method for these type of simulations. An attempt is made to utilise the simplicity of the IB method without having to rely on grid cells which lay outside the region of interest, while maintainig the quality of the numerical solution. This reduction in the total number of cells, which can amount up to 95%, could lead to significantly less computation time. By consecutively studying flow simulations through model and realistic geometries, first order convergence of the numerical solution is shown, which compares to previous studies adopting the IB method, and even unexpected higher-order convergence is observed.
