Programming data visualisations using Microsoft Power BI : building a scrap dashboard for BT2
Dietvorst, Cornelis P. (2019)
The main purpose of this thesis is to use data visualisations to improve waste management for a factory in the automotive care tire building industry. As the factory uses business intelligence software program Microsoft Power BI, this was used to make a data visualisation dashboard. After research in different ways, it was concluded that first the data had to be correct, followed by the conclusion that the dashboard should be made to improve time efficiency in daily work for the employees involved and facilitate functionalities that improve quick and effective analysis of the waste situation. After some exploration, a first list of requirements and a prototype for visualisations are used to build the dashboard after constructing a detailed specification, after the first feedback session inferred that the main objective was to keep it simple for maintenance sake. This report defines this process and the reason why the dashboard could not be automated yet in this stage, a description of the building procedure, followed by multiple rounds of feedback and design iterations, before reaching a final results. Based hereon, conclusions and recommendations are given in the final chapter. The main conclusions are that the dashboard is promising and allows employees to much quicker fulfil certain tasks that they encounter in daily life. However, the data should be exported to an SQL server to make it fully functional.
