Abstract:
Executive Function (EF) is crucial in self-regulating behavior. In persons with ADHD, this neurological function is deficient, meaning their ability to self-regulate is poor and their development of personal autonomy is compromised. Extended Mind Theory proposes that we use external objects as a functional part of our cognitive process. In order to offset EF deficits and aid growth of autonomy we may appeal to technology, but only under the conditions of cognitive extension, and by targeting the appropriate cognitive functions. This thesis offers qualitative review, analysis and argumentation of philosophical and epistemological knowledge on how best to bring this theory into practice, and explores what kind of technology offers itself for desired strategies.
