Interactive system for rhythmic synchronisation

Abstract:
Interactive technology for music teaching is a developing research topic. This thesis focuses on helping pre-service teachers in music teaching to help students stay in rhythm using interaction technology. The report delves into various literature that helps develop a system starting from sensing the instrument, then analyse the elements within the data retrieved from the instrument; such as beat detection and rhythm synchronisation and lastly providing relevant visual feedback to the pre-service teachers and students. Based on the literature study and the background research, a prototype is developed that reads the instrument data and analyses it. The prototype is later evaluated based on its individual properties and a user test is conducted to evaluate the performance of the audio-visual feedback component of the system. The system is maximally simple but it should act as a starting point to develop holistic, interactive systems for music teaching. The system is flexible such that the individual components of the end-to-end system can be improved based on the need.
