Leveraging 5G NR-U Bandwidth Parts in Coexistence with Wi-Fi

Abstract:
5G New Radio (5G NR) is known for its flexibility in deployment and supports many device classes and diverse application requirements, such as high throughputs and low latencies. The only limitation is the available spectrum resources in the licensed bands. Therefore, 5G NR traffic can be deployed on the unlicensed bands as 5G New Radio Unlicensed (5G NR-U), but suffers from a degradation in performance compared to 5G NR. This degradation is mainly caused by the channel access uncertainty in the unlicensed bands, since NR-U has to sense the medium before it can access it. In this thesis, the Bandwidth Part (BWP) and Bandwidth Adaptation (BA) features of 5G NR are leveraged in NR-U, to improve the throughput of the NR-U network and the coexistence with a Wi-Fi network in the unlicensed bands.
