Abstract: | Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a multifaceted mental disorder. Considering this and taking into account that AN can cause social and emotional loneliness, investigating the role of connectedness holds potential benefits. This review aims to provide an overview of the existing body of literature on the role of connectedness for people with AN to identify relevant research gaps, thereby guiding future research directions. A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Data relevant to the role of connectedness, measurement, diagnosis of AN, main findings, and form of connectedness were analysed using descriptive numeric analysis and thematic analysis. Results showed that high levels of connectedness emerged as a protective factor while low levels of connectedness pose a risk for the development and maintenance of AN. Most research is conducted on the role of connectedness to others. Moreover, a universal measurement of connectedness seems to be missing. This review demonstrates that despite the critical role of connectedness for people with AN, there is not enough research in this field yet. Consequently, evidence for recommending connectedness as part of AN treatment is lacking. Future research is needed that examines all dimensions of connectedness and its effectiveness in treating AN. |
