Abstract: | The rapid proliferation of renewable energy sources has led to several issues in current (micro)grids, such as a lack of inertia, instability, and poor Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF). To address these challenges, the concept of the grid-forming inverter has been introduced in the literature. These inverters are capable of meeting the necessary requirements. However, the control method is critical in terms of system requirements. This thesis simulates two of the most common control methods for grid-forming inverters (droop and virtual synchronous generator) and examines inverter behavior under various conditions (such as symmetric/asymmetric faults and islanded/grid-connected scenarios). The results indicate that inverters exhibit different dynamic responses under different conditions and that certain inverters demonstrate superior characteristics for specific requirements. As a result, a comparison table for inverters is created according to Dutch grid code requirements and some common expectations. Additionally, the coordinated operation of inverters is also explored in this thesis, with the results presented in tabular form in the conclusion section. |
