Abstract:This study explores social sustainability in urban infrastructure, particularly focusing on Amsterdam's historic inner-city quay walls. While economic and environmental aspects are well-researched, social sustainability has been underexplored. The study identifies key social sustainability indicators for asset management decision-making, using Social Life-cycle Assessment (S-LCA) to evaluate the social impacts of infrastructure interventions. Key indicators were identified from literature and case studies of two projects: Rechtboomsloot and Leliegracht. Through interviews with experts and the local community, ten indicators emerged, including health and safety, accessibility, cultural heritage preservation, community involvement, and quality of life. The findings reveal that Project Rechtboomsloot had significant social impacts during the implementation phase due to a long construction period and poor communication. In contrast, Project Leliegracht had more significant post-implementation impacts, including long-term dissatisfaction on intervention method and damage to homes. Both projects faced challenges related to accessibility, community trust, and local business disruption. The study suggests that Amsterdam's asset management could be improved by integrating social sustainability into the decision-making process, alongside technical, environmental, and economic evaluations. Future research is recommended to refine this framework for more socially sustainable urban infrastructure interventions.
