Abstract:Build Your Own Nature Scene aims to bring the development of interactable digital nature a step closer to bring the outside nature to a digital environment, so older adults with declining physical mobility can still regularly interact with nature in the safety and accessibility of their homes. This is done by designing, building, and evaluating an interactive interface with physical objects for interacting with a digital nature display, targeted at older adults. Additionally, there is also a focus on the social interaction among the older adult participants and how this is influenced by having control over the placement of nature elements within the digital landscape. This was tested with two small focus groups consisting out of older adults, and composed out of two different testing conditions; one which worked as it was supposed to and in which the participants were able to decide the placement of the nature elements within the nature landscape to a certain extent, and another test condition in which the placement was completely randomized. Additionally, the Bales’ interaction process analysis was applied to get a better understanding of the specific kind of social interaction between the participants during both conditions. When analysing all the available results, it strongly suggests that both groups preferred to have control over the placement of the nature elements when building their own digital nature scene, which also had a less negative influence on the social interaction among the older adult participants, which also suggests that it made the installation more intuitive and logical to use.
