Abstract: | This master’s thesis investigates the processes driving salt marsh edge retreat, focusing on the relationship between erosion rates and hydrodynamic forcing. Salt marshes provide crucial coastal protection and ecological benefits, yet global trends indicate increasing lateral erosion. The study examines the Wierum salt marsh in the Wadden Sea, where a near-vertical cliff edge (0.5 m high) experiences ongoing retreat. Using aerial imagery, digital elevation models, and hydrodynamic metrics (wave power and wave thrust), erosion rates were quantified over 2016–2024. Results indicate a positive correlation between hydrodynamic forcing and average erosion rate, following both linear and power law relationships, though data dispersion introduces uncertainty. Inundation frequency showed a negative correlation with erosion, suggesting wave intensity during inundation is a key driver. Spatial variability in erosion rates was minor, but smoother marsh edges exhibited faster retreat, aligning with existing theories. Vegetation was sparse at the marsh edge, yet a weak negative correlation between vegetation density and erosion rate supports its stabilizing role. These findings enhance understanding of salt marsh retreat in meso-tidal environments, offering valuable insights for conservation and management efforts in Wierum and similar coastal ecosystems. |
