Abstract:Self-assembly of 3-dimensional structures at the micro scale may provide paths to the fabrication of new materials. This thesis focusses on the process of 3-dimensional magnetic self-assembly at the macro scale. We intend to extrapolate the lessons learned at the macro scale to the micro scale. Spheres and tetrapods �tted with magnets are submersed in water and agitated by air bubbles. The airflow provides a distorting energy. Successful self-assembly by tetrapods into chains with branching was observed. Results were analysed and conclusions are taken. There are several recommendations for future work.
