Abstract: | During the internship a new design has been made for a heat exchanger. This heat exchanger is the evaporator in an Organic Rankine Cycle, used for electricity generation. The heat source is flue gas (from a Diesel generator). The challenge in this assignment is to maximize the thermal output of the heat exchanger, while also making sure the heat exchanger meets a number of other requirements. Whereas a normal heat exchanger has few spatial limitations, this heat exchanger should fit within a section of a 20’ shipping container. The assignment covers both the optimization side of the assignment and some very practical problems that one might run into when designing a heat exchanger. Several design choices are made, an optimization is done and the design of various components is considered to eventually come up with a well substantiated design of the full evaporator assembly. |
