Abstract:In manufacturing, there is a continuous need to lower conversion costs and increase production output. One of the areas where improvements can be made is in the internal logistics within manufacturing plants. Discrete event simulation of a production and transport system is a powerful tool to find inefficiencies in production processes and optimize them. During manufacturing there is an optimum number of people and material handling equipment that is required to maximize production output. With a simulation study these values can be found. In the thesis a method is proposed to perform a simulation study correctly. The proposed method is used in a case study. Part of the production and transport system of a large tire manufacturing plant is modeled in the software package Tecnomatix Plant Simulation. Transport control policy is created to regulate the internal transport. The model is used to determine the optimum number of tow trucks drivers and MHE and implementation suggestions are proposed to improve the internal transport within the plant.
