Abstract: | A combination of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and the Galerkin projection is used as a dimension reduction method, and is applied to the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. This dimension reduction method is shown to be effective on the linear part of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, in the sense that far fewer variables are present, but the complexity of evaluating the nonlinear term remains that of the original problem.By applying this model order reduction to the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, the model can become more relevant due to the improved rapidity of approximating the results, without losing too much accuracy. The full order results are obtained by discretizing the model with an Implicit-Explicit scheme. The reduced order model is obtained by applying POD and a Galerkin projection to the full order results |
