Abstract: | In this research a new method is developed for quantifying the leaf fall near level crossings for ProRail B.V.. Each year leaf fall can cause detection loss in the signalling system. The leaves form a new layer on the rail head preventing detection of the train. This can result in deactivation of the signalling systems. The detection loss, often called Loss of Shunt, can cause major collisions if it occurs near level crossings. Through an extensive literature review and analysis of existing methods a new approach is developed. In addition a map is provided of the level crossings, including the risk for detection loss caused by leaf fall. The result of this research should give insight in what order to take precaution in the signalling system near level crossings. |
