Abstract:During Laser Metal Deposition, small geometric deviations will occur in the shape of the bead that has been deposited. If multiple layers have been deposited to form a 3d geometry, these deviations will ensure that the part geometry does not meet specifications. To combat this, the implementation of a geometric height sensor was investigated, and a sensor based on coaxial laser triangulation was selected. Due to the experimental nature of this type of sensor, the sensor was modeled using geometric, ray tracing and optical models to design the implementation. The implemented solution was then assembled and tested in order to verify the behavior of the sensor with the created models. Furthermore the accuracy of the implemented sensor was experimentally assessed. Based on these experiments, conclusions where drawn and recommendations for a future redesign where created.
