Abstract:The research was conducted at Jacobs Douwe Egberts, in Utrecht (The Netherlands), in the manufacturing hall where the Senseo pads are produced. This research aims to minimize the rejections within the process. There are two types of rejections, rejections of semi-batches and rejections of the finished product (a bag with Senseo pads). To find the best possible settings, a simulation model was built. Many sources of variation are in place what makes it difficult to assess what the optimal parameter settings are. These sources of variation and characteristics are included in the model. We aimed to improve the settings for 1) the feedback loop and 2) the rejection limits. The feedback loop is a built-in weight stabilization system within the production line. The rejection limits determine when a semi-product or a final product does not meet the requirements. The parameters of the feedback loop can be changed to get a more stable weight, the rejection limits have a direct influence on the rejection rate, though also on the probability of accepting a flawed product. Some assumptions were made. These assumptions could impact the best settings, that effect is included in the implementation plan. In the end, the new settings resulted in a steep decrease of rejected coffee.
