Abstract:In this work we investigate the noise produced by the leading edge of a (flat) airfoil in a turbulent flow. This noise is generated by the change in boundary condition as the free-stream turbulent inflow meets the rigid airfoil geometry, generating sound when the flow adapts to a new configuration. In this work a setup for generating (relatively silent) inflow turbulence is developed. The generated flow and turbulence is then carefully characterised after which a flat plate airfoil is placed in the setup. The generated directional audio spectrum is then compared to the Amiet model. We find that this gives reasonable predictions in the low frequency range but under predicts at high frequencies.
