Abstract:The research on Europeanization as its own research area besides, European Integration is a field which is relatively new. In this paper Europeanization is conceptualized as `ways of doing things ́ shaped by the European Union and then incorporated into domestic political structures, public policy, and discourse (Radaelli, 2002). This thesis aims to address the phenomena of the European Union ́s influence on domestic policy. This is going to be approached by a qualitative single case study, which examines German environmental policy. The case is the Rhineland area in the west of Germany, which is the biggest lignite deposit of Europe. Framed by the Green Deal, this area shall be transformed into a sustainable model area, which is characterized by a green and circular economy. To achieve this ambitious aim an unprecedented structural transformation needs to be performed. This process provides a unique example for research on EU influence. This concludes in the overall research question: To what extent is the German environmental policy Europeanized? The correlation between adaptational pressure and domestic change will be analyzed to address the research question. This research was conducted by a literature review and additional semi-structured interviews with people directly involved in the transition process.
