Abstract: | This research examines the impact of a recent Google policy update on the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ecosystem. The update removes the requirement for explicit dependency on Google Certificate Transparency (CT) logs for CT compliance. CT logs are public records that help verify digital certificates and prevent unidentified certificates for a domain. The study compares logging policies of the top 5 Certificate Authorities (CAs) before and after the update and analyzes changes in domain logging practices. It also investigates how other browser vendors have adapted their CT policies. Major CAs showed little change in their logging behavior, while smaller CAs reduced their reliance on Google CT. The findings suggest minimal overall impact. Based on the results, two future research directions are proposed. This research contributes to understanding the effects of Google's policy update on the PKI ecosystem and CT compliance, important for maintaining secure digital communications. |
