Abstract: | The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in the next decade the number of people with dementia will increase to 78 million worldwide. People with dementia can experience many different cognitive impairments, such as loss of initiative. Loss of initiative can be anything from forgetting to eat or drink, or not taking medication. This can affect their lives and feeling of autonomy. Research about dementia does not focus on loss of initiative, only in reference to apathy. Therefore, there is not enough knowledge on how to design for loss of initiative. In this thesis the design space for loss of initiative is explored. Four design directions are found, motivation, stimulation, low threshold, and social interaction. With these design directions two tools are created, the design for loss of initiative tool, and a tool where both nudges and the design directions are used. Based on the design directions, a network of music players that can be placed throughout the house is designed. This network consists of one hub and multiple stations. With a smartphone app, music can be added to the music players and the network can be expanded. |
