Abstract: | This report summarizes our research into heuristics for inventory levels of reusable medical device (RMD) trays in hospitals, with a specific focus on the case of the Diakonessenhuis, a medium-sized hospital in The Netherlands. We show that generic methods from the field of inventory management are not applicable to the case of RMD tray inventories, and describe and compare domain-specific heuristics described by Fineman and Kapadia, Diamant et al. and Hosteins et al., using a discrete event simulation by the latter. We show that the heuristic by Diamant et al. performs best, provided suitable parameters are chosen. Finally, we look into the potential of operating theatre planning modification and the pooling of intercompatible tray types, and find that there is potential in the former, but fail to show potential in the latter. |
