Abstract:This research focuses on bridging the gap in smart building systems that collect extensive data but often neglect the accessibility and utility of this data for users. Specifically, it explores innovative interfaces for communicating real-time occupancy data within a university library context. By adopting a data physicalization approach, the study aims to use spaces and environments as interactive interfaces, making occupancy information more accessible and meaningful to students, thereby aiding their decision-making in selecting study spaces. The study employed a mixed-method approach, including surveys and focus groups with university students, to identify user needs and key requirements for an effective occupancy communication system. A participatory design study led to the collaborative creation of concepts for real-time occupancy data physicalizations, resulting in a design space that outlines the possibilities for physicalizing occupancy data. One concept from the workshops was further specified for future implementation. This research contributes to the understanding of how real-time occupancy data can be communicated in smart buildings. The defined design space provides a framework for future data physicalization projects, showcasing the potential of integrating data with physical environments to enhance the accessibility and utility of building data for occupants.
