Abstract:This thesis is concerned with tackling the buffer allocation problem present at a cable manufacturing company. In order to achieve this the manufacturing system is first mapped including its characteristics, performance, and product types. It explores various buffer allocation strategies with different algorithms and also tests their performance. The choice for this set of algorithms is based on a literature review and experience of employees at the company. Through conducted experiments it was possible to assess each algorithm and determine the most suitable algorithm for the presented case. A digital model is created that is both able to determine improved buffer allocations as well as guide production planners in their decisions. By implementation of this model the company gets additional insights in the performance of their manufacturing system and is able to see opportunities for an enhanced throughput.
